To find the right helmet size, start by measuring your head. Wrap a measuring tape around your head, just above your eyebrows, and over the widest part at the back.

Use this measurement to compare against various manufacturers’ size charts. Keep in mind that this is just a starting point since different brands use different head shapes, or “headforms,” for their helmets.

There are three main head shapes to consider:

  • Round Oval
  • Intermediate Oval
  • Long Oval

Most helmet brands cater to specific head shapes, but some models within a brand may vary. Although head shapes can differ, the human head is generally oval-shaped, which is why you might see both “round” and “round oval” as common descriptors.

To check the fit of a helmet, follow these guidelines:

  1. Positioning: The helmet should sit so that the top of the viewport or visor area is just above your eyebrows.
  2. Pressure: You should feel even pressure throughout the helmet. Any hotspots or specific areas of pain indicate an incorrect fit.
  3. Stability Test: With the chinstrap fastened, hold the helmet in place and try to move your head side to side and up and down. The helmet should stay in place, moving your skin slightly. If your head can move independently inside the helmet, it is too big.
  4. Initial Snugness: Helmets compress over time, so it should fit snugly when new but not uncomfortably tight.

High-end helmets often come with various thicknesses of linings and cheek pads, allowing for adjustments. For example, if the helmet fits well but the cheek pads are too tight, switching to thinner pads can improve comfort. Some cheek pads also have removable layers for further customization.

You shouldn’t be able to rotate or roll the helmet forward or backward when the chinstrap is fastened. The helmet should exert even pressure on your head without causing painful areas or “hot spots.”

Manufacturers recommend replacing a helmet every 7 years from the date of production. The EPS liner degrades over time, reducing the helmet’s protective capabilities. If you use your helmet daily, consider replacing it every 3 years due to sweat and oils accelerating the breakdown process.

Yes, if you purchase a helmet from MX Shop and it doesn’t fit, you can return it as long as it is unused and in the original packaging.
